Babylon (or: radioland)
Drehen wir am Radiophon
Vernehmen wir den Sendeton
Durch Tastendruck mit Blitzesschnelle...(click
clack)
Erreichen wir die Kurze Welle
Nach Feineinstellung mit der Hand
Lauschen wir dem Morseband
Elektronenklange aus dem Radioland
Turn the dials with your hand
Till you find the short wave band
Electronic music sounds from Radioland
We are turning dials of the radio
We are hearing the sound of transmission
By pressing a button fast
We reach the short wave band
After fine tuning by hand
We are listening to the Morse band
Electronic sounds from Radioland
Turn the dials with your hand
Till you find the short wave band
Electronic music sounds from Radioland
Kraftwerk - Radioland
A perfect world is a world where communication
is no longer a problem. A perfect world is a world where the borders
are no longer relevant. Perfection is unreachable. Man is fallible and
imperfect. There have been so many attempts undertaken to design our
world to our own desires. Attempts to make a perfect world - but only
under our conditions.
Globalisation.
Information-society.
But only under our conditions.
In mythology something similar was ventured:
a group wanted to unite the world and built a tower. But the tower fell
under it's own weight and pretence. The 'confusion of tongues' was a
fact. A perfect place to highlight this sort of misunderstanding is
on the short-wave radio. (the radio frequencies between 3000 en 30000
Hz). The short wave sections off the world and unites it in one large
'confusion of tongues'
The Global Village, spread apart by alleys
and back-streets.
The Information-society in which the information
is torn into fragments. Communication on a world scale - but no one
understands each other.
I want to do a couple of things:
An audio-performance whereby I'll demonstrate
the 'confusion of tongues'. Different radio stations will be audible
but incomprehendable.
Analyse the information: Because the information
will be fragmented, I will be forced to unravel the info to an almost
molecular scale.
The different languages: human languages, computer language (number-stations),
space language (sun and cosmic radiation), reconciled together.
Is there a universal language? Can perfection
be achieved by attaining such a language? Will we be able to recognise
this language as a language?
I will use the following equipment: different
short wave receivers, a mixing desk, a computer with windows and AudioMulch.
If there is no computer available then different effects equipment will
be used.
